A Review of Gyeongbokgung

Gyeongbok Palace There are many reasons why people are drawn to Gyeongbokgung Palace. I have been hearing about Gyeongbokgung for a long time. I know that Gyeongbokgung, in Korea, is like Tiananmen in China. So I felt very glad to have the opportunity to go to Gyeongbokgung with so many friends from the Woosong Herald.

We divided into three groups to visit Gyeongbokgung. When our group visited, tourists and primary school students attentively listened to their guides, learning about the history of the palace. Also, the elderly and other local Seoul-ites experienced the quietness of the impressive environs on leisurely strolls. Gyeongbokgung offers a different experience for different people. Originally constructed in 1395 under the reign of King Taejo, the architectural plans were supervised by Korean architect Jeong Do-jeun and his assistant, Sim Dokpu, and the site itself occupies approximately 410,000 square meters. Also called Northern Palace because of its location, Gyeongbokgung is Seoul's most prominent palace. Although situated in the middle of the city, once inside the gates of the palace, you quickly forget the hustle and bustle of city life. What is particularly appealing about walking through the site is that there is lots of greenery, a sight becoming an increasing rarity in downtown Seoul.

What left me with a deep impression is the National Palace Museum. The National Palace Museum is located south of the Heungnyemun (gate), and the National Folk Museum is located on the east side, within Hyangwonjeong. Entry to the palace includes admission to the museums as well. The National Folk Museum is well worth a visit, especially if you want some insights into Korean culture and the daily lives of Koreans throughout the country's long and turbulent history. I especially liked exploring the complex of dioramas, pagodas, and model homes on display in the museum's outdoor court. The museum itself is made up of three interconnected buildings -- there are maps available to help you explore. The National Palace Museum was created in 1992 and is filled with relics collected from archaeological digs at Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, and Jongmyo. Focusing on the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), it's the perfect place to learn about Confucianism (once Korea's main religion) and ancestral rites that were passed on through the royal line. The displays give insight into the lives of Joseon royalty and palace architecture as well.

Gyeongbokgung is a beautiful place I want to visit again. This time, we only visited it for two hours. I feel that I have not gotten to know its beauty at all. If you have the time, go there and experience this historical site!

Do you manage your stress? Stress causes illness and deterioration of health.

We get stressed in our daily life so we must learn to manage our stress.angry-guy

  1. First, if you want to release stress, you should use deep breathing as a way of life. During depression and anxiety, humans use shallow breathing. So in that case, if we practice deep breathing we can lower stress or stop it from happening.
  2. Also, simple exercise is a great help to you. Exercising your body makes you feel more energetic and happy. Concentrating on exercise will also bring warmth to your body.
  3. Do you know the phrase ‘Many hands make light work’? If you have a close friend, talking to them is a great method of reducing stress. A friend’s understanding makes you feel at ease.
  4. Surely doing something you like will get rid of stress. While you do hobbies, your stress runs away quickly. In addition, maybe you can’t pass the day without stress. At times like that you can’t do better than sleep. A sharp mind will become a soft heart.
  5. Most importantly if you take alcohol, caffeine and nicotine of cigarettes, just stop! They are a ‘Castle in the air’. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and will cause you heart rate and blood pressure to increase. This increases your stress in the long run. Temporarily, they make you comfortable and appear to relieve stress. However continually, if you take them to release stress your lifelong results will be bad. You can't ‘have your cake and eat it too’. (Health and Stress).

Staying Healthy through the Winter

The year is started by winter and finished by winter. 2012 has passed and so has the green summer. Now, we welcome winter back to complete the year.

There may be a lot of people who are awaiting winter since this summer was especially hot. Winter is the season of snow, skiing, and Christmas, but Sneezewinter is also the season of cold. The cold is one of the representatives of respiratory disease. It is a viral disease, so prevention is more important than treatment. When the weather becomes cold, people around you catch a cold or the sniffles. You can also have a sore throat and your voice may fail when you wake up. If so, how can you stay healthy during the winter season without getting a cold? I will show you 4 ways to have a healthy winter.

  1. Eat a lot of fruit and and drink a lot of water! Drinking a lot of water increases your metabolism. It is helpful for preventing respiratory disease. Cinnamon, quince and schizandra contain a lot of vitamins. If you brew them and drink it, you can prevent catching a cold. Also, there are fruits that have a lot of vitamins and nourishment like Mandarin, kiwi, and pear which will boost your immunity.
  2. Keep your room clean! The weather becomes colder and colder so, you won’t open the window to air out your room. But, dry air and dust from indoors are bad for the mucous membrane because it makes them irritated. It is important to air out a room regularly and to clean your room to remove the mites and dust.
  3. Live a well-regulated life with proper exercise. It is important to exercise and get rest. It is preferable to lightly walk, stretch and have a rest than to exercise suddenly.
  4. Wash your hands often. A respiratory disease is easy to spread at the hands of a person. So, when you come back home, you must wash your hands. Also, if you go to a public place or use public transportation, you had better wash your hands when you return home.

By doing these things, you can not only prevent catching a cold but have a healthy winter. Finalize your year by making it a fresh and warm winter with a healthy lifestyle!

Welcome to the Woosong Counseling Center!

counselling center Last October, I went to the Woosong University’s student counseling center and met with a counselor for an interview. The atmosphere of the center was more comfortable than I expected and counselees were seen during the interview time.

In the interview, one of the counselors spoke to me very kindly.

-Hi, when was this facility established?

-It was established before 2004, but I don’t know the date exactly.

-Yeah, how many counselors work in this facility and what is their major task?

-Three administration assistants, one counselor and one associate professor of the Medical Society and Welfare department work in this facility. We are tasked with not only counseling students who are suffering personal difficulty, trouble about their results, and sexual difficulty , but also do examinations which included the MBIT(personality test), vocational tests, and aptitude tests. Because of studying in the University, Students mainly want to test the MBIT and vocational tests.

-I agree, then, is there someone else for the students who are not fully resolved about their personal difficulties?

-In that case, I advise the student more personally than other ordinary students.

-Okay, what are the problems with students who are suffering not only personal difficulties, but also other issues?

-I think students are very strained about coming to this facility. In the Korean social atmosphere, those who are going to a counseling center or psychiatric hospital seem to some that they have a psychiatric or critical fault, like a stranger. But, this is unrighteous. In other countries, especially western, it is ordinary for individuals to seek psychiatric help.

Even a number of counselees conceal this fact fro people, their close friends and even families.

-Finally, do you have any advice for those who are suffering any difficulties?

-Woosong University students please don’t be scared about coming for counseling at this facility. I will welcome a student in a heartfelt way and hope to help you when you are completely cured about your difficulties as a counselor. Thank you for your questions.

During the interview time, I felt the kindness and sincerity the counselors had for students. I think this facility is necessary to accommodate many students who are  suffering difficulties and hope to activate in Woosong University. Thank you.
